Important
Notices
Before you download Knowledge Finder, please read the following
important notices:
| America Online, CompuServe, and
Prodigy Users
Knowledge Finder uses TCP/IP to communicate with Aries Systems
Database Servers. This requires a direct internet connection using PPP
or SLIP. If you do not have a direct PPP or SLIP internet connection through
your online service, Knowledge Finder will not work. Note that,
even though you are using your Online Service web browser to view this
page, and you could download the Knowledge Finder program, you will
not subsequently be able to communicate with our search servers if you
do not have a direct internet connection. |
| Institutional Sites (with a direct
Internet connection)
If you're accessing our Web site through your institution's LAN (Local
Area Network), your network administrator may have set up a firewall
to protect your LAN. While you may be able to download the Knowledge
Finder software through the firewall, the firewall may prevent Knowledge
Finder from communicating with Aries Systems Database Servers. If you
think this may be a problem, please check with your network administrator,
and tell them that you need to communicate using IP port number 7570. If
your administrator says that this is not possible, then we regret that
you cannot use Knowledge Finder at this time. |
| T-Online Users (in Germany)
Knowledge Finder now works through T-Online, if you have T-Online's
latest dial-in software package. Please contact our Customer
Service Department for more information. |
Compatibility
Security on the internet is of great concern to everyone. Some sites
have put in place added security through the use of a firewall or a proxy
server. A firewall protects your network by allowing only certain types
of transmissions to go to and come from the internet. A proxy server hides
your machine's real IP address from the general internet community and
is often used together with a firewall.
Firewalls may deny access for our EXPERT Knowledge Finder software
to search our internet databases. We have devised a small test that might
determine if you have a firewall located at your site or through your internet
service provider.
-
Check to see if your web browser is using a proxy server. To do this with
Netscape, select "Network Preferences" from the "Options" menu, and click
on the "Proxies" tab. If "No Proxies" is selected, then you do not use
a proxy server. If "Manual Proxy Configuration" is selected, you must click
on the "View" button and see if there any of the fields are filled in.
If all the fields are blank, then you do not use a proxy server. With Microsoft
Internet Explorer, choose "Options" from the "View" menu. If the "Connect
through a proxy server" item is not checked, then you do not use a proxy
server. In any other case, you are using a proxy server. Knowledge Finder
version 4.2 is compatible with most proxy servers.
-
Check to see if your site or service provider is using a firewall that
will prevent Knowledge Finder from communicating with Aries Systems
Database Servers
If you failed either of these two tests, please print out our Firewall
Compatibility page and give it to your IS department. They will be
able to determine if the firewall can be made to allow you to use Knowledge
Finder.
