Notes
The directories KFPREFS and KFCONFIG are no longer used by Knowledge Finder.
They have been replaced with a single user-specific preferences directory
called "Knowledge Finder". On Mac OS, this can be found in each user's
Preferences folder. On Windows, this can be found in each user's
Application Data directory. All preferences, auto-saves, sticky notes,
and other temporary data is stored here. The MetaViewer for Cochrane
has been enhanced to be fully user-aware as well.
The default "save as" file location is also user-aware. On Mac
OS, this will default to the user's Documents:Knowledge Finder folder.
On Windows, this will be the "My Documents\Knowledge Finder" directory.
The installer places default startup files into "Application Support:Knowledge
Finder" on Mac OS, and into "All Users\Application Data\Knowledge Finder"
on Windows platforms. When Knowledge Finder start up, it check to
see if any of the default startup files are newer than the user-specific
ones. If so, they are copied into the user-specific Knowledge Finder
directory.

Improvements
-
Added a workaround for a problem in the 2000 Publication Year MEDLARS databases.
The database description file has an erroneous paragraph identifier in
it, which would cause Knowledge Finder to crash if you attempted to remove
"CAS/EC Registry" using "Edit Display Formats".
-
Fixed a crash that would occur if you went into "Edit Display Formats"
and tried to add one of the two remaining paragraphs to the long display
form.
-
Fixed a concept mapping problem that would occur when the free-form search
query included the same word twice. This would cause extended concept
synonyms to be included when they were not supposed to be included.
-
Fixed a crash that could occur when exporting documents in save file format.
-
Fixed a crash that would occur on Windows when attempting to Save Search
Formulation or QuickSave over an existing file.
-
Improved search engine memory management on Windows platforms.
-
Improved handling of stop words in boolean searches. Engine will
remove stop words and attempt to rearrange the query string. Stop
words are words that appear too frequently to be of value, for example
the word "the" is a stop word. Previously, if a stop word was specified
in a boolean search (such as "THE and MAGNESIUM"), the result was 0 documents.
-
Printing references in Cochrane CCTR records has been fixed. Previously
they failed to show up on the print job.
-
Version strings and splash screens now reflect a year 2000 copyright statement.
-
QuickTime version 4.1.1 is now redistributed where necessary.
-
MS Java Build 3240 is now redistributed where necessary.
-
MRJ 2.2 is now redistributed where necessary.

placed on a second CD-ROM. Knowledge Finder had to be modified to
work with this two CD-ROM solution.

New Features and Improvements [Since Version 4.22]
Improved Local Holdings Support
Knowledge Finder will now display a web-style link if it is part of the
Local Holdings information (under the bookshelf icon), and if the link
is clicked on by the user it will launch a web browser and display the
link. This was done because Knowledge Web customers with web-style
links in their Local Holdings information want to use Knowledge Finder.
Speed Optimization
Knowledge Finder was built with the latest tools and compilers, which typically
results in a faster program overall.
