New Features [Since Version 4.20]

EndNote 3 Integration

Users of EndNote version 3 for MacOS or Windows can now export references directly to EndNote. This feature is accessed through a new choice in the Export sub-menu under the File menu. The previous two-step process of exporting saved documents and then importing them in EndNote is longer necessary.

Bugs Fixed

Between final candidate 3 and General Release:

In-text graphics (equations) in Full-Text databases weren't drawn correctly on Win32 and came out as black squares.
MacOS installer had a hidden character after the help file name thus disabling built-in help on that platform.

Between final candidate 2 and final candidate 3:

Fixed a concept mapping bug that was mapping words more than once if they appeared in a phrase. For example, once the term "HEAD INJURIES" is mapped into the subject thesaurus as a term, the system should not then try both HEAD and INJURIES separately.
The Windows installer now registers the ".KFR" file type during installation for MedWeb Partner usage. MedWeb Partners must associate the ".KFR" file extension on their web server with the MIME Type "application/x-kf-autolaunch".

Between final candidate 1 and final candidate 2:

Search engine would report error code 999 on the following MeSH term search (code was partially fixed on 19981015 for 4.21 alpha 1):

Between beta 1 and final candidate 1:

If a user searched MEDLINE 1990-1991 [1998 Edition] with the last publication type selected as a dictionary item, the search would spin out of control. This was caused by invalid logic added to work around a problem searching some MEDLINE authors in 1996. Fixed. [328]
XVT Error kpfwsys.c line 462 on startup. [299]
Switching to an older Full-Text database that does not have publication year information, for example JMRI 1991-1994 [Feb] Edition would cause a crash on Windows and likely lock up MacOS. [319]
Extended search controls (concept mapping) would go from standard to minimal when switching from MEDLINE to Full-Text, however switching back to MEDLINE didn't reset the controls back to standard when switching back. [314]
Summary window updated incorrectly and sometimes looked empty. [308]

Between alpha 3 and beta 1:

Workaround for a 68k compiler optimization bug in Metrowerks Codewarrior Pro 4. It turns out that Knowledge Finder 4.20 General Release does not run reliably on pure 68k MacOS machines. Optimization dropped down two levels - should only have a slight (2-5%) affect on system performance. [288, 305]
Fixed problems that occured when ejecting the CD on Win95 and Win98.
Fixed memory leaks that occured when viewing Full-Text images.
Fixed a problem where using Local Holdings on a Knowledge Host'ed database would always return the first title-specific information.
Fixed a problem using click-drag-select and "Add to Existing Search" or "Use in a New Search" from the document display window.
Fixed a problem copying selected text which resulted in garbage data on the clipboard on MacOS only.

Between alpha 1 and alpha 3:

Searching on "head femoral diameter wear" does not bring up "HEAD" as a concept like it used to. [293]
Searching on "acute pancreatitis" does not bring up "PANCREATITIS" as a concept like it used to. [293]
Fixed a problem using application/x-kf-autolaunch files in conjunction with IE 4 on Win32 - IE 4 does not pass the filename to the application in quotes, so any spaces in the file path will cause multiple arguments to be passed to Knowledge Finder. Added a workaround.
Fixed a crash that occured when a search word longer than 240 characters was used.
Internal regression testing bug-fix for images in Full-Text databases. [105]
Local Holdings does not work in Knowledge Server with more than one simultaneous user. [290]

Between 4.20 General Release and 4.21 alpha 1:

Copying images from a Full-Text database was not working reliably. [286]
The Copy command in the Edit menu doesn't appear immediately after a figure window is opened. After a delay it becomes accessible. [273]
Switching between three databases can cause a crash. [274]
The page up and page down keys do not work in the Full-Text thumbnail window. [200]
Printing tables from a full-text database with dynamic tables may produce duplicate columns on the printout when it spans more than one printed page. [244]
If a Full-Text image window is front-most, and the application is minimized and restored on a Windows machine, the Copy command in the Edit menu is no longer accessible. Workaround: Close the image window and open the image again. [250]
Publication Year range control no longer shows invalid statements about previous years. [204]
Scrolling up and down using arrows in a dictionary window can cause duplicate entries to appear in the dictionary list. [259]
[Win32 only] You can save to a non-location - for example "\\SERVER\FOO.TXT" without an error message. The file appears somewhere on the local hard drive. [284]
In MEDLINE and HealthSTAR, the title of any dictionary window may not reflect an accurate selected year range if the current publication year range selection does not include the most recent year. This is a cosmetic bug and does not affect the operation of the program. [240]
Save Search Formulation does not save the publication year range. [262]
Sticky notes do not work correctly when using a Full-Text database. [272]
Removed some debugging code in the search engine that was slowing down performance.
Fixed a crash that was caused by "DON'T USE" subject heading terms. For example:

(-) COLORECTAL NEOPLASMS/PA

Fixed incorrect search results when "DON'T USE" dictionary terms are used exclusively in a search AND the publication date range intersects the range within a database segment. For example, in 1998 the data for MEDLINE 1995 was split into the 1994-1995 [Sep] segment and the 1995 [Oct] - 1996 segment due CD-ROM space requirements. If the search contained only "DON'T USE" terms and the earliest or latest year was on 1995, the search results were no different than if the earliest or latest year was on 1994.
Fixed six bugs related to Full-Text table parsing, drawing, and printing:

Fixed a bug for tables that caused vertical lines to appear where they should not.
Table cells with a bottom rule were not being printed properly.
Fixed a problem printing tables where a cell has multiple instances of an alignment character.
Fixed printing when using non-default margins.
Two other non-descript crashes fixed.

Prevent mouse lockup if removable media change is rejected.
Win32 crash when invalid path/file specified for save file name.
Fixed an infinite loop in the table parsing and sizing algorithm.
Client identified itself as "Windows 95 4.10.00" even if running on Windows 98.
Client's service pack revision is now included in identification (Windows NT only).
Client's OS build number is now included in identification (All Windows 32-Bit platforms).
After entering the key code for ClinLine, the program would crash. [from 4.20c]
The Windows installer for Knowledge Server was inserting a key into the registry called KFINDER, and thus if a user installed Knowledge Finder and then Knowledge Server, it may not have been possible to perform a true UnInstall of either product. [from 4.20c]
The Windows 32-bit installer was not properly installing QuickTime for Windows 3.0.2. This was fixed by moving the installation of QTW to the very end of the Knowledge Finder installation procedure.

Known Bugs and/or Feature Deficiencies

This is a list of all the known problems in Knowledge Finder:

Attempt to print help text when no printer is selected will not show an error message. [320]
More Win16 dictionary scrolling problems especially in multi-segmented MEDLINE. [317, 316, 315]
Full-Text thumbnail window scroll bar disappears sometimes when using page up / page down. [324, 283]
The built-in help is not word-wrapping everything correctly especially at the end (see App. D). [325]
The Windows 3.1 installer creates multiple icons if run multiple times, and uninstallation removed them all. [287]
There is a slight delay when you open the font selector window. [275]
Copying and pasting images from full-text graphic or table windows on older databases doesn't work correctly and will result in unreadable images and/or text. [275]
Moving between documents using "Prior" and "Following" section buttons if there exists more than one document display window on the screen may cause the wrong document to appear. This only affects Full-Text. [249]
Locate Word(s) doesn't hilight words in the first line of the document window. [256, 227]
Saving preferences may round print options margins down by .01. [251]
If you change the size of your summary window and then select one of your search histories, when you open the summary window again it is back to it's default small size. [41]

Version 4.20c [Build 255]

This release was built solely for distribution on the ClinLine CD-ROM. It fixes a bug in the 4.20 release.

New Features [since Version 4.19]

AutoMap™ Concept Mapping

Through a technique called Concept Mapping, we are able to provide users with even better free-form search results. Knowledge Finder will find phrases in the free-form search and expand them to include:

Acronyms (i.e. AIDS expands to Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome)
Like Terms (i.e. Heart Attack expands to Myocardial Infarction, among other things)
Pre-Exploded Thesaurus Terms (i.e. Disease will include all thesaurus related disease concepts)

This greatly improves the relevance and thoroughness of search all user queries. Through the use of pre-exploded thesaurus terms, the old method of selecting an entire thesaurus tree into the search formulation is obsolete.

32-Bit Windows Support

Our Windows based installer will now install a 32-bit version of Knowledge Finder® when it is run on a Windows 9x, or Windows NT system. When installed on a Windows 3.1 or 3.11 machine, a 16-bit program is installed. Performance gains of up to 40% have been seen when searching with the 32-bit program.

QuickTime 3.0 Support

Knowledge Finder's support for QuickTime has been updated to version 3.0. QuickTime is only required for accessing Full-Text databases. (Note Windows 3.1 users will still need QuickTime for Windows 2.1.2 16-Bit because that is the current shipping release for 16-bit platforms).

Proxy Server Support

Due to the increasing demand for network security, many sites now protect themselves by using a firewall. Knowledge Finder®, in combination with some special software running at Aries Systems Corporation, will allow users behind a firewall to connect to Aries Database Servers. In this mode, Knowledge Finder® behaves like a web client. It talks to the local proxy server which in turn talks to our proxy gateway. Our proxy gateway then connects to the Aries Database Servers to complete requests. Knowledge Finder supports the latest proxy server releases from major vendors. Knowledge Finder will use persistent HTTP/1.1 connections if possible. This only applies to Aries-direct customers using Aries Database Servers at present.Note: This feature does not work with proxy servers that require user authentication for access.

Universal Local Holdings

Local Holdings allows database administrators to indicate to users if a particular journal is locally held, and if so how to obtain it. Locally held journals will be displayed with an additional bookcase icon in the document display window. Clicking on that bookcase icon shows the administrator-generated information. Local Holdings has been part of the Knowledge Finder product for quite some time (back through version 3), however this is the first release that supports databases other than MEDLINE. Any database that contains ISSN numbers can be referenced by the new Local Holdings system. Currently, support is built in for MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycLIT, and EMBASE Alert. A new Local Holdings Administrator and a new Journal Master List are available as part of the new system.

Full-Text Improvements

In response to user demand, you can print an individual image or copy it to the clipboard so that it can be pasted into any other program. Also, when viewing large documents over a slow dial-up internet connection, the document is now displayed as it loads so you don't have to wait.

Dual Column Printing

A new print option, called Dual Column Printing, will print documents with two columns. This option was designed primarily for Full-Text document printing so that the printed pages more closely resemble the original published articles. The printouts are also easier to read.

Enhanced Reference Printing

The formatting of full-text references during printing has been improved. In documents that have multiple sections of references, the references that are attached to a section now appear immediately following that section. Previously, all references for all sections were printed at the end of the document text. The section identifier is no longer necessary, so it has been removed. Furthermore, references now word-wrap with indentation. These changes were made so that the printed pages more closely resemble the original published articles.

Intra-publication Reference Links

In newly published Full-Text databases, if a reference refers to an article contained within the database, a link is provided to open the Full-Text of the reference article.

Colored Text

Added support for multi-color hilighted text, however no databases use this feature at present.

Document Delivery

Document Delivery has been enabled for the majority of our database product line, with the notable exceptions of EMBASE, CINAHL, and PsycLIT [we do not at present have a license to provide this feature for these databases]. More information about configuring this feature can be found in the Guide to Customizing the Knowledge Finder Installer. Note: In the institutional installer this feature is now enabled by default.

Links to CINAHL PDF files are now available from within Knowledge Finder. Clicking on the link will open Adobe Acrobat (if installed) with the selected document.

Memory leaks have been detected within QuickTime for Windows 2.1.2.59; consequently whenever a full-text journal is used for an extended period of time the system may run out of memory or become very sluggish due to virtual memory thrashing. Quitting and starting the application again fixes the problem. This problem cannot and will not be solved for 16-bit Windows because Apple is not updating the 16-bit version of QuickTime for Windows. Documents were not added to the print-list or save-file list properly from the document display window.
Copying from the image or table window in Full-Text on Win32 crashes. [246]
Multiple full-text windows open simultaneously cause crashes. [249]
Word dictionary window, MacOS only, the blinking text cursor didn't appear when the window was opened. [217]
Sticky notes in full-text databases appeared to get lost when using the prior / following article buttons (as opposed to the previous / next buttons). Screen was not re-drawn correctly. [247]
When a sticky note is created or opened, the user had to click in the sticky note window to activate it for text editing. The window now comes up active. [245]
A boolean search of the form "(A and B) (C and D)" would cause unexpected results. The system now assumed an implied AND, as such the results are for "(A and B) and (C and D)".
Fixed a crash that occured when opening the search controls window if PsycLIT 1984 - 1998 (June) was the current database.
Fixed a table alignment problem when a cell is aligned on a decimal marker, and that marker is the first character in the cell.
Fixed a bug where the subject thesaurus explode status on thesaurus terms would not travel between databases during a switch.
Re-inserted old code that allows users behind tunneling firewalls to use Knowledge Host as a database server.
Exporting references in EMBASE Alert now works correctly.
Fixed a deadlock (100% CPU utilization) in the Search Engine caused by strcpy on overlapping memory (changed to memmove).
Enhanced COFF debug information on Win32 builds for better crash debugging.
Fixed an infinite loop (100% CPU utilization) in the Search Engine caused by empty words - for example the search string " ' - FOO". The quote was dropped, however it stops the current word and thus we have an empty word.
Fixed invalid memory access in Search Engine that occured on all single-character words, for example the word "C".
Fixed boolean logic bug where a search of the form "(A and B) (C and D)" was not parsed correctly. This is an implied AND, however the Search Engine would go into an infinite loop attempting to process it.

[4.20 beta 7]

Fixed broken logic that would cause terms following a misspelled word to be forgotten when running a search.
Fixed broken logic that would cause intermittant crashes when searching for truncated misspelled terms.
Fixed a divide by zero error that occured when searching for exploded terms with subheadings and the subheading does not exist in the database segment being searched.
Replaced temporary workaround bit shifting code (to work around a CodeWarrior Pro 3.0 compiler bug) with more optimized code.
Fixed a multi-threaded problem where subject subheadings could cause a crash if multiple users were simultaneously performing Concept Mapping searches.
Fixed a stale pointer reference problem in the search engine that occured during suffix variant processing inside Concept Mapping. This would cause unexpected search results or a crash.
Fixed a bug in the search engine that would cause a crash frequently with Concept Mapping on. Related to combining scores for variants of a concept.
Scrolling in term dictionaries that do not have at least three full pages of items may result in crashes (related to fixes performed for 170). [230]
Error code -201 occured when using truncation and the root term did not exist in the database. [243]
Database scanning and mounting logic split apart to facilitate correct mounting of databases split across volumes. [157]
MacOS only: connecting to more than one Knowledge Host would cause a crash or a lockup. [233]

In the term or word dictionary window, page down using the scroll control immediately after the window has been opened. The display will scroll to the end of the list rather than to the next page. [#94]
Exporting a full-text document to a save file results with a relatively unusable document; and references are missing. [#44]

There is a basic design flaw in the method currently being used for processing linguistic variants of root terms in concept mapping. Local Holdings was causing 68k Mac to hang when displaying an article. [#168, 169, 77]

MacOS machines equipped with IDE CD-ROM drives were unable to eject the CD-ROM when the user selected "Eject CD-ROM" under the file menu. This is only applicable when using an Aries Database CD-ROM and not when using Knowledge Host to serve the databases.
A crash occured when you mount a medline and a full-text database simultaneously, then go to the full-text and select a document into the print-list, then go back to medline and print documents.
Win16 and Win32 platforms would crash when trying to move display formats entries around.
Journal titles now get hilighted when using them in a boolean search.
(Host mode only) click on the MeSH button, type an impossible word like "abcd" and search. Dictionary window indicating a misspell should appear - does not. Fixed.
UAL added to word stemming, so for instance VISUAL maps to VISION.
