DocuRights Pilot Project at Gottingen University Provides Secure Access to Psychology Textbooks Online

Langenfeld, Germany. December 4, 2000: Students and faculty at Gottingen University and other academic institutions in the German state of Lower Saxony will soon be able to obtain online access to 43 psychology textbooks in PDF format. The pilot project is a collaboration between Gottingen University; Hogrefe, a leading German publisher of psychology texts; and Aries Systems Corporation, developers of the DocuRights "secure container" technology.

As part of the pilot project, users will have open access to the PDF files on designated University workstations. However, copying the files for personal use outside of the University will cause documents to be protected with DocuRights, and users will be able to purchase individual textbook chapters for a price of 10 to 30 DM.

The commercial interests of the publisher, Hogrefe, are protected by DocuRights because access to the PDFs is controlled by checking the IP addresses of the workstation. Students and faculty are permitted to download the PDF files, but when they try to open them outside of the authorized IP address the DocuRights secure container will trigger a credit card transaction to enable access.

Hogrefe chose DocuRights because it seamlessly integrates subscriber mode and pay-per-view access; and offers end-to-end security and e-commerce processing. The Gottingen project has caught the attention of other institutions in North Rhine Westphalia and Switzerland, and they have entered into negotiations with Hogrefe for similar access options.

DocuRights has been developed by Aries to provide comprehensive content security solutions for STM (scientific, technical and medical) publishers. An integrated feature set provides for content use across multiple environments, including Pay-Per-View, institutional subscription access, personal subscription access, and electronic reprints for both authors and commercial sponsors. As emerging peer-to-peer distribution networks encourage pass-along of publishers' valuable content, DocuRights assures appropriate compensation back to the publishers and copyright holders.

Since the launch of DocuRights at the 1999 Frankfurt Book Fair it has been used with content from an increasing number of leading STM publishers, including the Massachusetts Medical Society (publishers of the New England Journal of Medicine, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, and S. Karger (Basel, Switzerland).
